Frequently asked questions.

How long does therapy take?

Therapy typically lasts between three and six months, though it may go for longer. Understanding your situation and the specific challenges you're facing takes time, and developing this understanding is crucial for effective therapy. Although therapy can be brief in some cases, generally transforming relationships and changing long-established patterns requires patience and commitment, as these shifts don't happen overnight.

My partner is not willing to come along, can I have individual sessions to help my relationship?

Yes, you are welcome to attend as an individual. While it is ideal for both people in a relationship to attend, important changes can occur when you work with a therapist individually. If you commence with individual sessions, then therapy needs to remain as individual therapy. It is not possible to switch between attending as an individual and attending as a couple.

What are the fees? Are rebates available?

For individual therapy gap fees are $60 per session in office hours if you have a mental health plan from your GP. Please contact us for further information.

Private health insurance rebates may be available depending on your private health insurance. If you are seeking individual therapy and have a mental health plan then medicare rebates are also available.

Is therapy based on scientific evidence?

There is considerable evidence that cognitive behavioral therapy is effective at improving anxiety and depression. The scientific evidence for the efficacy of psychological therapy in treating a wide range of conditions can be found on the APS website. For couples, the Gottman method by John and Julie Gottman and emotionally focused therapy developed by Dr Sue Johnson are based on decades of research with thousands of couples. John and Julie Gottman are both clinical psychologists and have closely observed both happy couples and couples who are distressed. From these observations they are able to predict the outcome of a relationship in 6 years time with over 90% accuracy (see their TED talk).
